2014-03-28 · With kids, Isle of Palms with out a doubt. There's a playground for kids at the beach (no playground at Kiawah).

I would not go back to Isle of Palms--too residential.It does not feel beachy. Also, there are a lot of sharks. I would either go south to Hilton Head or north to Litchfield by the Sea, Or somewhere in Outer Banks--which beaches depends on your preferences with regard to crowd and amenities.

My family (with college-aged children) is interested in vacationing in the Charleston beach area in mid-August 2009. After a bit of research, I have narrowed our list down to just two places: Kiawah Island and Isle of Palms. Can you tell me the pros and cons of each? Kiawah is very beautiful and very green. We have 10 miles of beautiful, bikeable beach, over 30 miles of bike trails, kayaking close by, literally tons of gators (have been going to watch them almost every day this week), all the things you are asking for above.

The beaches are great on both. The Isle of Palms is not a gated community, but rather a more "rustic" community with a long oceanfront road and numerous houses on either side. There is a pier, several restaurants, and a grocery store. Both Wild Dunes and I of P are very close to Charleston, SC. Kiawah is more isolated.
