Professor at the University of Lund, Sweden until 1959, he is since then Professor of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Gothenburg; he is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and others. He detailed Carlsson’s journey to his Nobel Prize winning research on dopamine: Growing up in Sweden in an academic family, [Carlsson] had done his doctoral work at the University of Lund on calcium metabolism, and planned to pursue this research as an independent faculty member. Fate would have it otherwise. Dr. Susanna Holm Waters was enrolled in Nobel Laureate Professor Arvid Carlsson’s research group at the Department of Pharmacology, Göteborg University in 1993, and has since then worked with research in the areas of CNS pharmacology and drug discovery, pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacology, and basic clinical research, in the setting of collaborations with big pharmaceutical companies as well as academia, with a focus on computational biology applications. hroughout my career in Neuropsychopharmacology, Arvid Carlsson served as an inspiration, a scientific muse, and later as a mentor and friend. The inspiration was derived from the truly remarkable body of research that laid the foundation for his award of The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2000. Abstract.

Arvid Carlsson, a pharmacologist, is best known for his contributions on the neurotransmitter, dopamine. Carlsson was born on January 25, 1923 in Uppsala, Sweden. Carlsson had started Medical school in 1941; however, he withdrew from school for several years to serve in the Swedish armed forces. Finally, in 1951, he finished his M.L. degree. 2018-12-09 Arvid Carlsson’s research led to the recognition that Parkinson’s disease is caused by dopamine deficiency in some parts of the brain and subsequently to the production of Levodopa, an effective drug against this disease.

Because of the war, his studies were interrupted several times by military service. Arvid Carlsson (born 25 January 1923) is a Swedish scientist who is best known for his work with the neurotransmitter dopamine and its effects in Parkinson's disease. For his work on dopamine, Carlsson was awarded the Wolf Prize in Medicine (1979) together with Sperry and Hornykiewicz, and later the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000, along with co-recipients Eric Kandel and Paul More: http://www.sfn.org/about/history-of-neuroscienceSociety for Neuroscience archival interview with Nobel Prize-winning Swedish scientist Arvid Carlsson. We regret to announce the loss of Dana Alliance member Arvid Carlsson, M.D., Ph.D., who passed away last Friday at 95 years old. Carlsson laid the groundwork for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease by discovering dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in motor function. This year’s Arvid Carlsson Award by Sahlgrenska Science Park went to the founders of 1928 Diagnostics, Kristina Lagerstedt and Susanne Staaf.

Eftersom jag haft förmånen att tala med Arvid vid olika tillfällen genom åren är det roligt att dela glädjen över positiva resultat för A. Carlsson Research på Sahlgrenska Science Park. More than 50 years ago, the Swedish scientist Arvid Carlsson undertook basic research on the neurotransmitter dopamine that was not only rapidly converted into clinical investigation but also resulted within a few years in the first clinical treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD), a therapy that is still in wide use today.
